Its appearance was preceded by the events of the First World War, a tough economy, the scarcity of countries participating in famous events. That is why the creative intelligentsia and the aristocratic elite, forced to lead a nearly ascetic lifestyle for a long time, chose fashionable apartments, luxurious luxury interiors, exclusive and expensive furnishings.
Today, Art Deco is chosen for decorating status interiors, boudoirs of movie stars and pop stars, famous artists and musicians. For decoration, expensive decoration materials are used - stingray or crocodile skin, ivory, amber. Also recognizable feature of the style are geometric patterns that adorn various surfaces and materials. The main design palette uses a dominant bright color or a combination of contrasting colors. Story
Atre Deco got its name in 1925 after an exhibition of contemporary decorative and industrial art ("Internationale des Arts Decoratifs Industriels et Modernes") in Paris, which was attended by many countries, including the USSR. Many innovative developments for that time in the field of architecture and interior design were presented at it. In the 20s - 30s of the 20th century, interior design in the Art Deco style was popular among designers. So decorated residential apartments, banquet rooms of expensive restaurants, exhibition galleries.
The style has absorbed the spirit of time and travel, it is filled with the ideas of historical eras and the latest discoveries. For example, in the interiors, the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, the study of the traditions of the Aztecs and Mayans, was reflected.
A new wave of popularity covered Art Deco at the end of the twentieth century. Designers rethought the main features of the style, and he triumphantly returned to European interiors. Now they began to combine expensive equipment and furniture along with luxury decoration of rooms.
Recognizable features
The Art Deco interior design has common features with Art Nouveau, Empire style and modern styles (high-tech, for example). However, to distinguish among others it is easy according to the following principles:
1. The geometric pattern that adorns the walls and ceiling is the main feature of the Art Deco interior. Zigzag and straight lines can adorn furniture and textiles. Round motifs often adorn the ceiling and are reflected in direct proportion to the floor, repeating on furniture or in decor.
2. Expensive and rare natural materials are the focus of attention. So, in the living room there can be an exclusive furniture set made of crocodile leather, door handles can be inlaid with ivory and platinum. Instead of a carpet on the floor, a zebra or leopard skin can be used.
3. The color scheme of the premises is based on the principle of contrast. As a rule, they combine strong juicy colors from a dark and light gama. Traditional: white and black, white and purple, gold and red, gold and black, white and brown.
4. Denial of asceticism and minimalism. If the space is organized in the Art Deco style, then it is not customary to use inexpensive materials and save on furniture or lighting. The interior design of Art Deco does not create the impression of an expensive one, it really is.
How colors are combined
Color is designed to emphasize the status of the interior.Along with the use of the contrast principle, color combinations are used in similar colors. For example, Art Deco suites are decorated in a beige-golden color scheme, which is favorably emphasized by the shine of mirrors and crystal, or in a beige-red color scheme. Both interiors are decorated with pronounced geometric shapes.
For the interior of the living room or office, they select more dark shades. The union of deep brown and gold looks respectable. The room is decorated with wooden panels made of natural lacquered wood, leather furniture with golden accents is selected, and expensive lamps with exclusive golden legs complement it. Also, dark purple and gray colors are chosen for decorating the rooms, complementing them with black and white.
Creating Art Deco in the interior, you can safely combine colors of a completely different spectrum, for example, red and green. To achieve harmony in the interior with such a selection of shades, it is necessary to use a neutral color as the basis - black, gray or white.
Patterns, lines and geometric shapes are important for creating an expressive Art Deco look.
The most commonly used are:
- a strip that can be represented as a thin or thick line;
- motifs from repeating circles, rhombs, or squares;
- floral motifs used for textile decoration of rooms;
- animal prints, among which the most popular are the patterns of zebra or leopard.
Materials and surfaces
Art Deco is a style designed to surprise and delight. Therefore, shiny, glossy, varnished surfaces are chosen for him. They can be represented by polished natural marble, mirrors, PVC stretch film, self-leveling floor, lacquered wood panels.
In honor of natural materials:
- cow, crocodile, snake skin;
- chromed and gilded metal;
- polished animal bone;
- valuable species of rare trees;
- crystals.
Organizing the space of the premises in the spirit of Art Deco, they try to realize the original idea using exclusive decor, furniture and decoration items. To decorate the premises do not take publicly available items of mass production. Often for the interior use the ideas of Egyptian, Roman, Chinese culture.
Furniture
For interior design in the Art Deco style, furniture with simple and convenient forms is suitable. For the bedroom, they select a bed, which is the central object. It can be equipped with chromed legs, a high headboard, inlay and patina.
The living room is dominated by large leather armchairs and a sofa. Furniture should look respectable and expensive. Artificial leather is not suitable for upholstery, but you can use expensive dense fabric. A soft group is usually complemented by a tea table with a glass, marble or wooden surface.
The Art Deco kitchen is filled with the latest technology, organizing the area as functionally as possible. In the middle of the room there is an island with a hob, a working area, a sink. It necessarily has exclusive wine cabinets, illuminated niches, a rich dining area. It is she who occupies a central place in the spacious kitchen. It is equipped with a large dining table and comfortable chairs.
Window decoration
Typically, the windows are decorated with simple drop-down curtains made of heavy fabric with drapery. Depending on the chosen interpretation of the interior - classical, historical or modern - the curtains can be chosen as multi-layered with lambrequins, Japanese in the form of even paintings or modern light curtains.

- parquet with a geometric pattern;

For modern interiors, a bulk floor is chosen, as a rule monophonic or with a geometric pattern.
Walls
Since the space is filled with exclusive bright objects, the walls are just a background that sets them apart favorably. The walls are made plain, sometimes decorating them with patterned panels.
For wall decoration use such techniques:
- textured plaster;
- staining with a matte paint;
- the liquid wallpaper;
- natural stone or ceramic tiles (mainly for the kitchen or bathroom).
The ceilings
Multilevel, stretch, with beautiful stucco molding and lighting - any of these ceilings can be in the Art Deco style. It is usually decorated with a large chandelier around which there is a patterned rosette in the shape of a circle. If the ceilings in the room are not high enough, then they are decorated with mirror panels. High ceilings are decorated with paintings and stucco molding, placing artistic elements at different levels.
Stretch glossy ceiling is great for living rooms and bedrooms, it can be complemented by spot lights and a central chandelier.
Textile design
Textiles only complement the interior and do not take on the main role. Therefore, it is made plain, less often with an ornament.
A lot of fabric can be used to create comfort in the bedroom:
- curtains with deep folds;
- blanket with frill;
- canopy;
- soft pillows;
- high pile carpet.
Designers are advised to use textiles with floral ornaments in extreme cases. It is better to choose products with stripes or one tone.
Accessories and decor
As accessories use objects of art such as paintings, sculptures, painted vases.
Also the interior is filled with:
- forged candlesticks;
- large mirrors in gilded frames;
- bronze or porcelain figurines.
Large specimens of exotic plants are also often placed in an office or living room, complementing the overall flavor.
Lighting
Lighting plays an important role in interior design in the Art Deco style. With the help of beautiful sconces, floor lamps, chandeliers, not only decorate ceilings and walls, but also illuminate the whole space, emphasizing the brilliance of mirrors, marble and wood.
