Do-it-yourself children's bunk bed is a project that is likely to cause great interest among many readers. These beds are very popular with both children and their parents. Children love bunk beds because they can easily be turned into a place for fun games. Parents - for their compactness, because even in a small room you can now accommodate two children at once.

Materials, tools, parts and their sizes
Personally, I am not a fan of bunk beds, because I have two little sons who love to arrange brawls. But the side rails of this particular bed to some extent guarantee safety, provided that the children understand what can be done and what cannot be done categorically!
To make this bunk bed, you will need wooden (preferably pine) beams for making the frame. When buying lumber, make sure that all the bars are straight and well-dried. If there are any defects on them, then it is better to buy more than the estimated amount in order to be able to not use the areas subject to culling.
Necessary materials and their sizes:
number | Thickness mm | Width mm | Length mm | Part Name | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
A | 4 | 38 | 76 | 1730 | legs |
B | 4 | 38 | 76 | 1730 | external overlays for legs (to cut out necessary length) |
C | 4 | 38 | 140 | 2030 | side walls |
D | 4 | 32 | 44 | 1850 | support bars |
E | 8 | 20 | 140 | 914 | upper and lower back boards |
F | 4 | 20 | 90 | 914 | central back boards |
G | 24 | 20 | 76 | 1000 | bottom slats |
H | 1 | 20 | 90 | 1510 | vertical element of the stairs |
I | 3 | 20 | 64 | 482 | stair steps |
J | 2 | 20 | 90 | 1800 | side rails (cut the required length) |
In addition to this you will need:
- 8mm dowels;
- wood glue;
- drill and set of drills;
- countersink;
- jigsaw;
- surface grinding machine and grinding stones 120- and 240-grit;
- clamps.
Headboards
The head of the bed and the foot of the bed are identical, except that the design of the upper part of the leg is slightly different on one back, which allows you to place a railing on the fence here.
The foot is almost identical to the head. If you belong to those people who do not like to rest their feet against the head of the bed at night, do not install a central board at the foot.
Side walls of the bed
The supporting bars attached on the inside of the side walls have a number of blocks. Their purpose is to prevent the movement of bottom rails. To fix the supporting bars, it is better to use both glue and self-tapping screws so that there is no doubt that they will withstand the load.
Assembling a bed frame
The bottom slats are held in place solely by gravity. Blocks on the support bars prevent them from slipping.
Ladder assembly
The ladder is simply fixed with screws on the frame so that it can be easily disassembled for transportation.
So you made your own bunk bed for children. It remains only to protect the wood (and, therefore, extend the life of the bed) by covering it with a layer of varnish. Whether you choose a clear varnish or tinted, matte or glossy depends on your preference.
