I want to share my experience replacing the lower rotten crowns in a private log house. When the question arose about their replacement 5 years ago, it turned out that it was almost impossible to find 8 meter logs 25 cm thick. Then the main criterion, when choosing the right material, was environmental cleanliness and that I would do all the work alone. I decided to replace them with brickwork. After preliminary calculations, I found out that the foundation under the house is weak, and it will not withstand the weight of such a masonry. He began to look for lighter material and settled on blocks of foam concrete.
Another argument in favor of this choice was the ease of processing, they are easily filed with an ordinary hand hacksaw, and their low thermal conductivity. I used special glue to fasten the blocks, since the edges of the blocks are perfectly even. This made it possible to avoid a decrease in the thermal conductivity of the walls due to the natural freezing of cement joints. Despite the fact that I worked alone, I managed to finish all the repair work before the onset of cold weather, thanks to the large size of the blocks 30x30x60 cm. This, together with the restoration of the house sheathing. In winter, in the basement of a house where there is no heating, the temperature does not drop below + 15 ° C.
pros
Light weight. Ease of processing. Big size. Ecological cleanliness. Almost seamless connection. Time saving.
Minuses
Additional weather protection is required from the street to get the declared thermal conductivity
